We love seeing powerhouse women making waves in the music industry, so you can imagine how stoked we were when the incredible Ecca Vandal asked WAAX along to join her on her triple j supported ‘End of Time’ tour. It’s not the first time the two acts have shared a stage; both played the very first installment of Brisbane clubnight Pesci’s last year. Now the dream team’s back together, WAAX frontwoman Marie DeVita aka Maz slung some juicy q’s over to Ecca ahead of the tour…
Marie DeVita: Firstly! I have to know who does most of your artwork? And what influences your visual choices?
Ecca Vandal: My super talented bud MSG does most of my artwork – when we first sat down to talk about concepts behind the artwork we chatted about keeping it old skool. I was watching a lot bones brigade videos like public domain and animal chin at the time – 80/90’s skate punk culture was the main inspiration and I know MSG is always true to the style so I knew he’d be the perfect dude for this gig – proper cut and paste , photocopy styley!
M: What was it like to support The Prodigy? Do you consider them an influence?
EV: One of the most insane moments of my life. It was only my third live performance ever so the Luna Park bigtop stage was quite frightening! I was honoured to open up for pioneers like them – they were pushing the enveloping back when I was in primary school and are still pushing boundaries today. I wouldn’t say there have been a direct influence musically, but I’ve always respected and admired their work.
M: Top 5 favorite albums?
EV: THIS IS A HARD ONE MAZ!!! But I’ll try…. 😉
1. In Rainbows – Radiohead
2. Songs for the Deaf – QOTSA
3. Kind Of Blue – Miles Davies
4. Homogenic – Bjork
5. Grace – Jeff Buckley
M: Where would you most love to tour and why?
EV: I need to put two down:
1. Japan – so I can go shopping
2. New York – so I can go shopping 🙂
Not to mention the awesome food and of course music I could check out in both places 😉
M: Your vids rule! Do you have a favourite person to work with?
EV: Thanks lady. YES! Again I have TWO:
Andy Stalph – he is one of the best editors around. He also gets me and understands some of my crazy jibberish ideas without me actually having to explain too much. He has an awesome eye and great taste.
Kidnot – Kid and I working really closely on music in the studio, but I feel because he has a deep understanding of who I am as an artist so it’s really easy to discuss and bounce ideas around with him about how I could translate what I do into the visual domain.
