Gypsy & the Cat push forcefully into the synth-spangled future with their latest single ‘Life’, from their impending third album Virtual Islands, out Friday 5 August.
Initially much more sombre in mood than the album’s previous singles ‘Inside Your Mind’ & ‘I Just Wanna Be Somebody Else’, ‘Life’ nevertheless follows along the same theme: self-determination through independence, despite isolation. The result is defiant and bold, with Gypsy & the Cat deftly exploring their capacity for light and shade.
Indeed, frontman Xavier Bacash is “the most proud of this track”. Bacash also asserts that Japan’s influence (where much of Virtual Islands was conceived) is the most evident in ‘Life’.
Virtual Islands is several years in the making, and if the reaction to its previous two singles is anything to go by, it’s safe to say it’s awaited with a voracious appetite. ‘Inside Your Mind’ and ‘I Just Wanna Be Somebody Else’ both charted at #2 on HypeMachine, and their respective quirky visual mini-series featuring Housetu Sato’s famous woollen cat head only served to intrigue the blogosphere more.
Virtual Islands is released Friday 5 August.
