HUNGRY KIDS OF HUNGARY ANNOUNCE NEW SINGLE & NATIONAL TOUR

July 7th, 2009 | By

www.myspace.com/hungrykidsofhungary

They brought you a pair of feel good hits for the Summer, commandeering airwaves with singles ‘Set It Right’ and ‘Scattered Diamonds’ floating from car stereos in beach car parks all over Australia.  And while you were busy licking ice-cream off your hands, the Hungry Kids of Hungary were doing it tough; sweating it up on festival stages and touring the east coast with other Unearthed upstarts the Philly Jays and Washington.

So now it’s time to hibernate on the couch for Winter, take in some Astro Boy re-runs and marvel at how comfy elasticised waistbands are, right?  Fine for some, but the Hungry Kids are busting out the jumping jacks and swapping beer swilling for a more refined red this Winter, adding layers of both the cardigan and musical variety to their pop-rock ways with a the brand new single ‘Old Money’.

‘Old Money’ showcases one of the more mature moments from the sophomore EP Mega Mountain, offering lyrical oddities of spoilt brats and trashy publications wrapped in a blissful ball of classy piano-driven rock that many consider one of their best.

With a video on the way and a limited edition promotional single now available, the Kids want to show where they’re going. Track two of the single takes a brilliant upbeat turn with the ‘Scattered Diamonds (Alcopop Remix)’ from Sydney’s No Device. The two members of the new electronic duo – Luke and Kurtis (two former members of Erase.Release) – were so enamoured with the track that they chose it to be their first ever project before moving on to singles from their own heads as well as remixes for Dappled Cities and The Basics.

Fans will recognise debutante track ‘The Dance’ from a very different live incarnation. Here, it rounds out this release as a demo from earlier days, hinting that it all might perk up for Spring. But not before the kids try on some indie-sheik keeping Bertie Blackman company throughout July and August around the country, some places for the first time!

THE BASICSSailing Into 2009 On A New Ship

February 28th, 2009 | By ben

Puts a musical punch right in the belly of pop mediocrity” –
Peter Cobbin, Senior Engineer, Abbey Road Studios.

2008 was a busy year for Melbourne trio The Basics; they toured relentlessly to some of the most remote outback areas Australia has to offer, making new friends and fans in high schools, indigenous communities, community centres and pubs and clubs along the way.

2009 already promises to be a huge year for the band. To kick things off, their new single With This Ship will be released on Tuesday 22 February and is the first song from their ominously titled forthcoming album, Keep Your Friends Close.

In April, The Basics will play some very special shows taking audiences on intimate and acoustic journeys featuring never before seen photos, videos and many unseen rarities exclusive to the tour. Tickets will be limited, so don’t miss out on The Basics showcasing their exclusive offerings from Keep Your Friends Close!

With This Ship heralds a significant new direction for The Basics. While retaining the band’s trademark three-part harmonies, they are forging a bold path towards an altogether unexplored musical landscape.

With This Ship is something of a musical map, charting the often unpredictable and tumultuous ocean of relationships. It illustrates the hope-filled struggle of fighting against the tide of

personal history, but also the hopelessness sometimes encountered when trying to mend rifts in relationships ravaged by hurt and time.

But fear not. The Basics’ lush vocal harmonies will lift you over the swirling symphony of stormy guitars and lay you softly on the shore.

Armed with an epic video clip (think Tim Burton does Yellow Submarine via a Monty Python haze), With This Ship sets a new benchmark in Australian video animation.

Mixed by Peter Cobbin (U2, The Beatles’ Anthology, Lord of the Rings) at the famed Abbey Road studios in London and featuring production contributions from prominent New York-based engineer Michael Brauer (Coldplay, My Morning Jacket, Bob Dylan, John Mayer), and local wizard Francois Tetaz (Architecture In Helsinki, Lior, Gotye) The Basics are certainly keeping good company.

With This Ship is released independently on February 22 2009 and is distributed through MGM.

Don’t miss The Basics’ exclusive showcases at…

THURSDAY, APR 16 | HYDE PARK HOTEL (BACK ROOM), PERTH

FRIDAY, APR 17 | SPACE THEATRE, ADELAIDE

SATURDAY, APR 18 | ST MARTIN’S – RANDALL THEATRE, MELBOURNE

THURSDAY, APR 23 | TRANSIT BAR, CANBERRA

FRIDAY, APR 24 | THE GLOBE, BRISBANE

SATURDAY, APR 25 | THE VANGUARD, SYDNEY

SUNDAY, APR 26 | THE VANGUARD, SYDNEY

More dates to be announced soon!

Can’t wait until April to see The Basics?
