M Jack Bee

The label ‘singer-songwriter’ is cast around all too easily in today’s musical landscape – a term commonly associated with acoustic guitars, indulgent lyrical themes and predictable song structures. Byron Bay musician M Jack Bee is an observer, a whiskey drinker, a distinctive performer and overall, a musician that shirks off the singer-songwriter stereotype with ease.
Working under a moniker has given M Jack Bee the freedom to create an expressive personality that exists in itself. His live show melds bittersweet songs of love and fear, often climaxing in melodic walls of seemingly full-band noise created with only his guitar, an array of loop pedals and a vocal performance in the realm of Jack Ladder-meets-Neil Diamond-meets-Byron Bay surfer dude.
His 2010 release ‘In Loops’ was recorded live in one take, in a falling down house within the hills behind his home of Byron Bay. Rhythm Magazine declared it “world class” with Time-Off proclaiming his live show as “a revelation”. After selling out the first print and garnering praise for its intimacy and boldness, M Jack Bee is now ready to release his next single ‘Sound Of Love/She Said’.
Produced by Dave Symes (MD for Sarah Blasko, Sleepy Jackson), the record captures the lyrically longing, heartbreakingly honest poetry of yesteryear, with a keen touch of satire. As a live studio affair, his record showcases a dynamic full sound influenced by Symes’ direction: “I loved the way he worked. He was all about time and feel, in the old school sense, letting a song breathe naturally, making sure I was owning it and not ‘covering’ the material” The record was recorded in a single day and will be issued on a limited 7″ vinyl print and available in October.
After recently supporting Pete Murray, Husky and M Ward, M Jack Bee will be embarking once again with Pete on an upcoming 18-date national tour before continuing his own live show further with an East-Coast tour in support of his own 7” vinyl release. Eager to return to the studio, the rest of M Jack Bee’s year is set on applying the finishing touches to the next EP.
