Ball Park Music

Ball Park Music began to crawl as an uneventful solo adventure for singer/songwriter Sam Cromack. In the eighth year of the naughties, equipped with a little collection of songs, his adventure took him to Brisbane, where, at a serendipitous pool-party he encountered Daniel Hanson, Dean Hanson, Paul Furness, Brock Smith and Jennifer Boyce – five of the most talented and delightful musicians he’d ever met. Long story, short – they started playing music together, adopted Cromack’s “Ball Park Music” moniker fulltime and began baking a unique pop recipe, full of sliding trombones and heart-breaking folk, jangly guitars and honky-tonk piano.

The band released the self-produced debut EP Rolling On The Floor, Laughing Ourselves To Sleep in 2008 and immediately began pricking years with songs like ‘All I Want is You’ and the brass-laden ‘Black Skies’. A rapidly formative year followed for the sextet in 2010 as they released a follow-up EP – Conquer The Town, Easy As Cake – discovered a cohesive sound, snared a couple of nominations at Queensland’s Q Music Awards (for the stunning ‘Western Whirl’) as well as experienced a pair of naughty, alternative-radio hits in the immensely popular ‘iFly’ and most recently ‘Sad Rude Future Dude.’

On-stage, the band really discovered their live legs and nabbed an indie wish list of support sets appearing alongside the likes of Philadelphia Grand Jury, Cloud Control, Deep Sea Arcade and Boy & Bear, as well as a coveted set at triple j’s Ausmusic Month Party (where they collaborated with Custard’s Dave McCormack) and their first national tour supporting Hungry Kids of Hungary.

So what’s next for this talented six-headed pop juggernaut? Well now armed with an ever-swelling fanbase and a growing amount of recognition and radio play, not to mention a couple of nods from triple j’s Unearthed with a spot on their Next Crop list as one of the hottest acts to watch in the country and a Big Day Out slot, it’s not hard to predict the future for this band.
