Today, Melbourne based songwriter and producer Darling James releasesMOOD EYES; a clutch of six pastel pop sonic super novas which premiered on Purple Sneakers this week and kicks off his six date East Coast tour in support of the release.

MOOD EYES picks up from the most accessible moments of where predecessor, 2016’s Theory Of Mind left off and strides into a world of high-key but measured and dignified pop. James O’Brien, the man behind the Darling James moniker pieced togetherMOOD EYES at home over most of 2017, scrapping and reworking countless songs before settling on the six tracks that make up the release. He then took the recordings to long-time collaborator Robin Waters (Eves Karydas, Ella Hooper, Washington,The Boat People) who sifted through the reams of synths, vocals, string instruments and samples O’Brien had offered. The result is a vast chasm of pop songs that address everything from regret and acceptance (‘Didn’t Get It Right’), burning the candle at both ends (‘Glass Canoe’) to the joy of leaving the party scene behind for the one you love (‘You’re the Only One I Need Now’).

Darling James weaponized his aural cache on MOOD EYES explaining  “I made good use of my fast-growing synth collection on this E.P. but also mostly used live drums and quite a few of the tracks feature guitar solos, which is about as old-school as you can get. I really like crunched, strangled, fuzzy guitar sounds, like the one’s St Vincent pulls, so we went for those during the mixing process. I also love sampling acoustic instruments and making new, strange sounds out of them. There’s a German children’s zither that features heaps on this E.P. but it’s been twisted and detuned and bent into all sorts of weird shapes!”

Darling James will be joined on the road with his band, to expertly recreate the many moving, complimentary sonic parts of MOOD EYES for six dates up the East Coast including stops on the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Byron Bay, Melbourne, Sydney and Coogee Beach. PRAISE FOR DARLING JAMES

“It’s as much an aural roller-coaster as it is an emotional one, as O’Brien lays everything out on his sleeve to present a vulnerable, honest, incredibly alluring composition that stands as an exceedingly strong first foot forward and leaves us pretty dang excited to see what’s next to emerge from the fledgling Darling James camp.”

– Mitch Knox, themusic.com.au

“This has the clever pop sensibilities and piercing lyrics you’d expect from a guy who was once a part of the criminally underrated Brisbane act The Boat People.”

– Dom Alessio, triple j

“His songs are consistently surprising, playful and boundary-pushing, but still with an accessible emotional core.”

– Kate Miller-Heidke

“His debut single Ultimatum Talk hinted at a songwriter and producer extending an already unique and eclectic musical perspective to new discoveries.”

– Wally De Baker (Gotye)
