Darling James travels to Jakarta, creating a frenetic spectical of videography for EP track ‘Indonesian Cigarette’. Off the Melbourne musician’s debut Theory of Mindthe song’s disconcerting mix of textures and rhythms conveys a feeling of uneasiness while still drawing the listener in. In a somewhat of a mirror of this effect the video’s editing depicting moments in the seemingly hectic spaces across Indonesia’s biggest city.

Creating the ‘Indonesian Cigarette’ video was no small feat. After a facebook call-out, and a bit of research, James discovered Indonesian band Indische Party, and their highly stylised videos. Arriving in Jakata, Indonesia’s capital, James met up with the band’s Jagger-esque front man and film director, Japra. The filming for the Indonesian Cigarette video took place over two full day, and night shoots that saw James, and Japra’s team traverse all around central Jakarta, on the bustling inner city trains, and buses, in the beautiful Sentul pine forest south of the city, and at a hip indie-rock club located in the fashionable Kemang area. The result? A gorgeous piece of cinemaphotography that shows what can happen on a whim.

‘Indonesian Cigarette’ is the last in a string of successful singles from James’ textured debut Theory of Mind which explores the human condition with sophistication and intelligence. With national attention from triple j, Double J, the blogosphere and community radio heads behind this former frontman of The Boat People, it’s time for an official launch.

“This has the clever pop sensibilities and piercing lyrics you’d expect from a guy who was once a part of the criminally underrated Brisbane act The Boat People.” – Dom Alessio, triple j

His debut single Ultimatum Talk hinted at a songwriter and producer extending an already unique and eclectic musical perspective to new discoveries.”  -Wally De Baker (Gotye)
