Soundcrane is a compilation of Australian artists creating cover versions of famous or remarkable Japanese music to raise funds for the disaster relief effort in Northern Japan. Musicians around the world owe a lot to Japan – they’ve given us some of the most wildly unique, cute, and totally iconoclastic music, often blazing the trail for others to follow. In the wake of the horrific disaster of March 2011, a group of Australian artists decided to give some back to Japan in the most fitting way they know how – by creating sonic tributes to some of their favourite Japanese bands and artists.

The final result is a 19-track compilation featuring artists such as The Boat People, Lawrence English, McKisko, Robert Davidson (of Topology), The Rational Academy, Edward Guglielmino and many more. It’s an incredibly diverse set of tracks ranging from perfectly-crafted pop to mind-bending avant-garde sounds, with artists giving nods towards Japanese greats such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Supercar, as well as familiar themes such as Astroboy, Spirited Away, and Final Fantasy VII.

No-one involved with this project has been paid, there is no marketing or printing budget to cover, so every cent you pay will go towards the Australian Red Cross Japan appeal. It’s just a small way to help in the giant task of rebuilding Sendai and other coastal towns, providing relief and stable housing for literally hundreds of thousands of displaced people, and managing the nuclear situation to ensure Japan remains a safe place to live in the future.
