Hungry Kids Of HungaryAnnounce New Shows

October 7th, 2008 | By ben

While the mere mention of their name often invokes raised eyebrows and amused smiles among the uninitiated, Brisbane four piece Hungry Kids of Hungary produce music that inspires equal measures of curiosity and joy.

The band name hints at the personalities of the four people within the band, while never taking themselves too seriously, it’s this attitude that is perhaps the secret to their incandescent, soulful brand of pop.

“It’s good to have four opinions, none of us have big egos, if someone’s got an opinion on a song we’ll try it out” states co-lead singer and guitarist Dean McGrath.

The result, according to The Courier Mail’s Pat Whyte is… ‘Seamless, intelligent shimmering pop with instant appeal and that classic songwriting stamp on songs made to last like Set It Right, One By One and Arrest This Heart.’

Originally forming in March 2007 after watching each other in various other bands around town, HKoH came to form around the common thread of each member being huge fans of classic bands of the 60’s. Add to their 60’s pop sensibility a health lashing of soul and it’s clear the Hungry Kids have done their rock history homework, but manage to apply their learning without ever sounding formulaic.

It’s this influence which lead to Richard Kingsmill’s comparison;

‘These guys are hitting more for the ‘67 r&b London vibe.  They’re pretty good at it too.’ (Triple J Unearthed review of ‘Lenny’)

Nick Findlay’s evaluation;

‘I really dig this song – it’s got a really sweet melody which reminds me of the indie I used to listen to whin I was about 9 – and the hook is catchy as hell!

Will keep my eyes on these boys.’ (Triple J Unearthed review of ‘Set It Right’)

Wasting no time in launching their debut, self titled EP at The Zoo in July this year, they have since made it their mission to play as many shows as possible, currently looking at doing a further 12 shows between now and December in the Brisbane area alone while gearing up for interstate shows to further promote the EP in late 2008/early 2009.
